Omaha Transportation Master Plannning Meeting
November, 2010 – The City of Omaha Planning Department today announced a public meeting to kick-off the City’s update to its Transportation Master Plan. Similar to the process to update the City’s Downtown Master Plan in 2009, the process will start with a public meeting on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Mammel Hall, 6708 Pine Street, at 6:30 p.m. The Federal Transit Administration’s Regional Administrator, Mokhtee Ahmad, will be in attendance.
Mayor Jim Suttle will kick-off the meeting, followed by presentations from the City of Omaha Planning Department and the project’s consultant, AECOM. The kick-off will include an overview of the planning process, followed by small group discussions to share ideas and determine the public’s vision for the future of transportation in Omaha.
The Transportation Master Plan covers all transportation modes, including: automobile, transit, freight, air, bicycle and pedestrian. The Transportation Master Plan update will focus on public input, including the formation of a citizen stakeholder committee after the November kick-off. The Planning Department will seek representatives from across the community to participate in the year-long process as a member of the committee.
“Seeking public input is imperative to the City of Omaha’s planning process,” said City Planning Director Rick Cunningham. “I am confident the public will bring many creative ideas to the meeting about how to improve transportation in Omaha.”
The City’s current Transportation Master Plan was approved by the Omaha City Council in 1997. The costs of the Transportation Master Plan update are fully covered by a grant awarded to the Douglas County Health Department entitled “Communities Putting Prevention to Work” from the CDC. More information about the grant can be obtained by contacting the Douglas County Health Department and LiveWell Omaha.
The City has recently updated its Master Plan with the Downtown Master Plan. In addition, the environmental element to the Master Plan (Environment Omaha) is currently in progress.
Also there is a cycling specific meeting that is being help on Monday the 15th @ 6pm at the Courtyard Marriott in Aksarben Village (1625 S. 67th St). Please come out and help make our voices heard.

Contador completes Tour de France reconnaissance
Specialized will dominate the Tour!!!
Spaniard says 2010 race harder than last year's
Defending Tour de France champion Alberto Contador wrapped up a four-day reconnaissance of the critical Pyrenean stages of this year's race, stating, "We've seen the stages that will decide the Tour."
Contador rode all four stages with seven of his teammates who make up the Astana team's pre-selection for the race: Dmitri Fofonov, Paolo Tiralongo, Benjamin Noval, Daniel Navarro, David de la Fuente, Jesus Hernandez and Oscar Pereiro
Stages 14 through 17 of the Tour will take place in the Pyrenees, with the first day ending on Ax-3 Domaines, then two mountainous days without hilltop finishes before the second rest day followed by the race's grande mountain finale atop the famed Col de Tourmalet.
Contador called the Tourmalet finish "the last chance of victory for the climbers" and said the race should be almost decided after this stage.
During his reconnaissance, Contador happened to meet some of his main competitors at the top of the Tourmalet: brothers Andy and Frank Schleck of the Saxo Bank team, who had climbed from the opposite direction from the Col de Soulor.
With little more than one month before the Tour de France, the Astana captain said he is satisfied with his form, but has not yet reached his peak. "The [sensations] are good, yes, but not yet like those of the Tour, because there are still three and a half weeks before the start and this is not a good time, it is still a time of allergies, and that limits me a little," Contador said.
He will compete in the Dauphiné Libéré beginning this weekend before topping off his pre-Tour preparations with a preview of the Alpine stages.
"I'm doing the preparation as I wanted," Contador said. "After a serious stop after the Classics (about 10 days off the bike) it was hard to start again, but everything has gone as planned. I'll do the Dauphiné without pressure, as a tune-up, because the preparation is perfect," he said.

Burry Stander's Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper Carbon HT 29er | Cyclingnews.com
Burry Stander (Specialized Factory Team) used this Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper Carbon HT at the recent Sea Otter Classic.
A carbon 29er chassis and lots of custom tweaksLike many lighter riders, current UCI U23 cross-country mountain bike world champion Burry Stander (Specialized Factory Team) places a high importance on equipment weight since it comprises a greater percentage of total mass than it does for bigger competitors. Little tweaks here and there may only shave a few grams but when you only weigh 65kg (143lb), it doesn't take much to feel a difference.
Regardless, even Stander understands that weight isn't everything as he added a 29er hardtail – with its heavier wheels and all – to his quiver of race machines just this season. This proved to be the perfect choice for last month's high-speed and non-technical Sea Otter Classic course, too, where he raced the new bike for the first time and won in a three-up sprint over Geoff Kabush (Team Maxxis-Rocky Mountain).
Old habits die hard, though, as Stander's Specialized S-Works Stumpjumper Carbon HT 29er is no boat anchor and displays a wealth of tweaks to bring it down to an impressive 9.23kg (20.35lb) fighting weight.
The foundation is Specialized's top-end S-Works Stumpjumper Carbon HT 29er carbon frame, claimed to weigh just 1,130g (2.49lb) with a tapered head tube, chunky down tube and chain stays, and integrated bottom bracket. Mounted up front is the Specialized/RockShox collaborative Reba S29 fork, which uses stock upper tubes and lower legs but a carbon fiber crown and steerer assembly and inertia valve damper internals for a racier feel, especially in combination with Stander's preferred high air pressure.
Componentry comes mostly from SRAM's ultralight XX 2x10 group but with a few substitutions in key areas. New XX-compatible Rotor Q-Rings are bolted to Specialized's own S-Works carbon fiber crankarms with Carbon-Ti bolts, and the rear XX brake caliper adapter is mounted with red-anodized alloy hardware.
The Specialized label is also applied to the Roval Control ES 29 wheelset with its tubeless-compatible rims, 2:1 lacing pattern and interchangeable front hub fitments; the still-prototype Renegade 29 low-knob tires set at 26psi and converted to tubeless; the carbon fiber S-Works crankset; the S-Works Pro-Set stem; a single carbon fiber bottle cage; and the new Romin SL saddle.
Specialized's S-Works MTB cranks are among the lightest available.
More European touches come courtesy of the Syntace Duraflite 31.8 Carbon flat handlebar with Extralite bar ends, the carbon fiber AX-Lightness seatpost, and a carbon fiber headset cap assembly from Carbon-Ti. Finishing things off is crankbrothers' revamped Eggbeater 11 pedals.
At 1.74m (5' 9") tall, though, Stander clearly has some issues getting the front end low enough for his liking. In addition to the flat bar, the stem is set at an unusually aggressive negative 16-degree angle and even the upper headset cover is removed to save a few millimeters.
Fit issues aside, Stander's immediate success on his new 29er means we'll likely see him on it more as the season progresses.

Vinokourov pretty in pink at first Giro
Astana leader takes the pink jersey from Evans
On just his third ever day in the Giro d’Italia, Alexandre Vinokourov (Astana) has taken the leader's jersey from Cadel Evans (BMC). The Kazakh rode into the pink jersey after Evans was caught up behind a crash along the seafront with fifteen kilometres to go.
“It was very dangerous, we were riding on small roads,” Vinokourov said atthe finish line. “I managed to ride in the front and stay out of trouble in the first group. It was part of our plan to be active in the echelons. I’ve finished the job but the team has done excellent work.”
Astana was well represented in the front group of 29 riders with Paolo Tiralongo and Andreï Grivko in support of Vinokourov while Evans was left alone and forced to chase in order to limit the damages.
“I was riding the last ten kilometres without thinking of taking the pink jersey,” Vino said. “I had seen that Andre Greipel was up there, so I was convinced that he’d win the stage and take the pink jersey with the time bonus. But he didn’t win, so the jersey is mine. To get it is wonderful. I received it without looking for it, really. This is my first participation to the Giro d’Italia and I already have the jersey.”
When he left his home in Monaco to reach Amsterdam for the Giro, his twin sons Nikolaï and Alexandr who are eight years old, asked him to bring a pink jersey back as a gift. But there is more than a sentimental reason for the Kazakh to be happy in leading the race.
“This gives me so much satisfaction”, he added. “It’ll give us the privilege to start in last position for the team time trial. This is perfect. We’ll have more information about our adversaries. I don’t want to make any plan further than Wednesday. After the team time trial, we’ll see where we are on GC.”Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Cancellara: King of the Cobbles
Fabian Cancellara entered cycling's pantheon with a dramatic victory in Sunday's 2010 Paris-Roubaix. "Spartacus" decisively powered away from an elite group of eight riders with 50km to go, becoming just the 10th man to win Tour of Flanders and Roubaix in the same season. Just a week after winning Flanders on his S-Works Tarmac, Cancellara hopped aboard a Specialized Roubaix and dropped arch-rival Tom Boonen ahead of the Mons-en-Pévèle cobblestone sector. Cancellara was briefly joined by three breakaway riders, then simply soloed all the way home against a strong headwind to the Roubaix velodrome to win by a two-minute margin. "I think it was my big motivation today (to match the record). I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but things went perfect, the team was great," Cancellara said. "It's been an amazing week. I need some time to realize what I have really accomplished. Cycling has a long, long history. To be #10 (to win The Double), and the way I won it, I am really proud." Thor Hushovd crossed the line second and Juan Antonio Flecha was third, but the outcome was pretty well determined as soon as Cancellara took the race by the scruff of its neck. The victory saw Cancellara at his finest. His Saxo Bank teammates protected him all the way through the decisive Arenberg cobblestone section where the real battle commenced. Strong northerly winds seemed to muzzle any daring, long-distance attacks and a fairly large group came out of the Arenberg.
Three riders – Bjorn Leukemans, Sebastién Hinault and Leif Hoste – had pulled clear of a lead group of about 20 riders. Cancellara decided he didn't want to wait for others to make the race and punched accelerator on the pavement just ahead of the Mons-en-Pévèle with 48km to go. "Everyone was talking Cancellara against Boonen. They told me, don't race his race, race your race," Fabian said. "That really helped. I decided I wanted to make the group smaller, and then no one could follow me. I kept going full gas, and then I knew the race was only for second place." Saxo Bank was superb throughout the day. Kasper Klostergaard snuck into the day's main, 19-man breakaway. The team then controlled the middle part of the race, with Matti Breschel, Stuart O'Grady, Gustav Larsson, Dominic Klemme, and Frank Hoj working the nose of the main pack. When Cancellara attacked, he didn't need teammates anymore. "Fabian is the most amazing rider I've ever worked with," said Saxo Bank team manager Bjarne Riis. "The team rode fantastically, just like they did last weekend. But Fabian is such a special rider, he can do things like that by himself." Riis thinks Cancellara is on such good form that he should ride Amstel Gold Race and Liège-Bastogne-Liège later this month. Cancellara wants nothing of that, at least not right now. "The only thing I want to do right now is have a party with my teammates," he said. "I want to enjoy this moment, if even for a few days." After his spectacular victory, he certainly deserves it. |

Specialized Takes Flanders
Fabian Cancellara (Team Saxo Bank) and his S-Works Tarmac SL3 were simply too much for the competition to overcome in Sunday's Ronde van Vlaanderen, a.k.a. Tour of Flanders. The win instantly established “Spartacus” as a legend in Belgium and represents his third triumph in a cycling monument (Milan-Sanremo in 2006, Paris-Roubaix in 2008). It also marks a Flanders “Tarmac SL 3-peat” for Specialized, following back-to-back wins in 2008 and '2009. With 45km remaining, Cancellara’s attack on the cobbled climb of the Molenberg created the winning break with Tom Boonen. The power duo continued over the next three climbs – the Leberg, Berendries, and Tenbosse – and gained time on the chase behind that included David Millar, Philippe Gilbert, and Björn Leukemans. Thousands of screaming fans lined the penultimate climb, the Muur-Kapelmuur, known simply as “The Muur”. It was here that Cancellara sensed the moment was right to ditch his companion and ride solo to victory. "There were so many people lined out on the Muur, I could hardly hear or understand where Tom was behind me,” said an elated Cancellara. “When I finally looked back, I understood I had some distance. When I realized I'd dropped Boonen, it was like having wings on my feet, and I kept going all the way to the finish.”
Cancellara accelerated smoothly in the saddle – at times putting over 1400 watts through his Body Geometry shoes – while Boonen and a diminished chase group seemed to struggle and stomp on the pedals. In the end, the Swiss champion finished one minute and 15 seconds ahead of his Belgian rival, while Philippe Gilbert rounded out the podium in third. Fabian was grateful for the incredible support from his Saxo Bank teammates. From the first of the day's 15 climbs, Saxo Bank headed the race to control an eight-man escape group to keep both Cancellara and Matti Breschel in contention. With Stuart O’Grady frequently setting a brutal pace on the steep hills, Cancellara admitted that the advantage was having Matti. “I knew that Tom must have spent energy to follow Matti, while we just sat near and watched the others…the team’s work gave me even more power.” Spartacus has little time to celebrate, though, as he and his fellow Team Saxo Bank riders trade their Tarmac bikes for the S-Works Roubaix in preparation for next Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix, alternately known as “The Queen of the Classics” and “The Hell of the North”. Meet Romin
No, it is not Roman Craig, the smarmy Uncle from The Great Outdoors, which is a great movie and one of the best roles Dan Aykroyd has ever played.
It is actually Specialized new saddle for 2010, the Romin. I have used a variety of saddles over the past few years; some winners and some losers. This one is a big winner, and today became my saddle of choice for road this season. In the past 2 years I have used a variety of saddles including(in no particular order); Fizik Arione, Fizik Aliante, Fizik Antares, Bontrager RL Inform, Selle San Marco Concor Light, Selle San Marco Regal, and now I have moved on to the Romin.
Specialized Body Geometry(BG) saddles are designed with pressure mapping and blood flow tests to make sure they are maintaining a minimum amount of normal blood flow. Click Here for a link telling you about their BG saddles.
The Romin and SL version are designed for the rider that spends time in the drops on a road bike, and wants to be comfortable while doing so. The channel/cutout is extended to the tip of the saddle for better hip rotation as well as an overall better fit on a bike.
First impressions of this saddle were mixed. One quick look and you want to say it is 'too thin' or 'too hard,' but ultimately it is comfortable when you sit on it with a pair of bike shorts. So with that, I went into Sunday's ride with an open mind. Literally, 5 minutes into the ride I was hooked. The saddle just felt good from the word 'GO'. Once I put some power to the pedals, and motored down the road the saddle felt great. I ended up doing about 40 miles on it with a lot of climbing and some flats on my way out to Fort Calhoun and back. I had no numb feelings over the course of my entire ride, which is not something I can say about any saddle I have ever ridden. It truly is a revolutionary saddle that can certainly make any bike ride more enjoyable. This will be gracing all my bikes soon, it really is a wonderful saddle that is the best I have ever ridden.
Don't just take my word for it. Here is Frank Schleck telling you about it.
The Romin is new for 2010 and it is making a big splash. Here are some of the features:
- Patented BG Design is lab tested to assure blood flow to sensitive arteries
- "Medium" rated ultra-light padding for longer rides
- "Medium" rated carbon-reinforced shell for all-day racing and durability
- Tough, light and water-resistant Micromatrix cover
- Length: 270mm
The Saddle comes in 2 versions: - The Romin SL which has Durable, lightweight solid titanium rails $150
OR - The Romin which has Lightweight hollow chromoly rails $110
